Us Dopes love the originality you can find in many of the historic towns in New Jersey. One of our favorite places in NJ is Allentown, a little historic village in Central Jersey with a Thomas Kincaid style main street. The downtown includes a few restaurants, adorable shops, a church that has been converted to the public library, and an old mill that houses many of our favorites spots!

DiMatias

There is only one liquor license in town and it belongs to DiMatias. DiMatias has been a staple in Allentown for ages and is located in a historic building on Main St. At one point it was also a hotel, but now it is a restaurant and bar, with a strong emphasis on the bar! The bar is tucked in the front left side of the building in a cozy wooden panel room. During the warmer months, the outside porch seating cannot be beat!

The Public Library

The Allentown Public Library, in a big yellow church building, is one of the most unique in the state. The upstairs has a huge bookstall where you can sift through piles of books, both new and old, and purchase them at a steal! They also host some really fun events and programs, ranging from Civil War lectures to Jane Austen tea parties.

The Moth Café

The Moth Café is on the first floor of the Old Mill and is a vegan & vegetarian café that serves breakfast and lunch. The large exposed beams, rustic wooden floors and tables lacquered with old newspaper articles about New Jersey are enough to keep us coming back, but the food, coffee & service is also top notch. The chickpea sliders & beet burgers are refreshingly delicious and the Reese’s cappuccino and Nutella latte are unreal, making this café a #TwoDopesFavorite.

The Shops at the Old Mill

The Old Mill, which is indeed quite old, is another remarkable building in town and includes unique shops that you cannot find in your local mall. The One Eyed Turtle sells only free trade and ethical products, including clothing, children’s toys, housewares and accessories. Finally, a reason to feel good about shopping! The Green Lace Lion

is another shop in the mill, hosts art nights where you can make your own wreaths, or join in on a painting class. The rustic vibe and sparkly string lights add a charm to these already fun artsy activities. We had a great time at the bring-your-own-wine painting classes, but let’s just say one Dope focused on the painting while the other Dope was all about the wine.

La Piazza

La Piazza is the towns pizzeria and it is a popular spot for the locals. Finding a spot in the parking lot on a Friday night is nearly impossible! They have creative pies loaded with all sorts of goodies, like Chicken Bacon Ranch, Best in the West or their Loco Pizza with fries, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks & buffalo sauce. The stand out pizza for us is the Barcelona Pie, which is a Brooklyn Sicilian style pizza with mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatoes, fresh basil with a balsamic glaze. This pie is the perfect combination of sweet and salty and is refreshingly unique.
