Brooklyn Square in Jackson, NJ

Updated: Nov 7, 2019

When you’re voted the best pizzeria in New Jersey, everyone takes notice. In the summer of 2017, NJ.com announced that Brooklyn Square in Jackson won their pizzeria show down so we knew we had to pay them a visit. Nestled in an unassuming strip mall on a country road, you could easily drive by without realizing that this joint is a pizza destination for all of the hardcore foodies in the Garden State.

Brooklyn Square is best known for their Upside Down Square pie with fresh mozzarella, homemade sauce and a layer of pecorino Romano cheese. While this pie might look like your standard Sicilian, this specialty crust is so thick and airy that it is hard to put this pie in the “Sicilian” category.  Owner and pizza master, Pietro Grippo, is dedicated to the quality of his pizzas and makes fresh dough every day specifically for this pie. If it’s not used by the end of the day, its tossed in order to maintain the uniquely fluffy and pillow-like texture of the crust. The perfection of the crust is enhanced by the sauce on this Upside Down Square pie, which is a family recipe that Pietro credits to his grandmother. Made with san marzano tomatoes, which are crushed by hand, this sweet, lightly salty and savory sauce is a show stopper. Trust us when we say the sauce is worth the visit alone!

We also tried the Honeymoon pie, a square pie with a crispier & thinner crust much more consistent with a Sicilian pie. Topped with imported pepperoni and a honey glaze, it combines the sweet and savory in a cheesy package.
